Title: Bioinformatics Program Manager

FLSA Status: Full time/Exempt/Salaried

Reports to: Chief Conservation Scientist

Direct Reports: None

Location: Fort Collins, CO preferred, flexible work environment

Salary: $80,000 to 90,000 annually commensurate with experience

Bird Conservancy of the Rockies is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit headquartered at the Environmental Learning Center at Barr Lake State Park with a satellite office in Fort Collins, CO. Bird Conservancy of the Rockies conserves birds and their habitats through an integrated approach of Science, Education, and Stewardship. Our work radiates from the Rockies to the Great Plains, Mexico and beyond.

Position Overview:

Bird Conservancy of the Rockies is seeking a programmer/ developer to oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of Bird Conservancy's web and bioinformatic infrastructure. This includes maintenance of existing web and data applications and development of new technical solutions including but not limited to web interface (e.g., Rocky Mountain Avian Data Center), APIs, databases (e.g., Biological Inventory and Research Database) and analysis pipelines. Qualified applicants will have a strong background in programming (Python, JavaScript and .NET), database development and management (PostgreSQL and SQL Server) and the ability to develop custom APIs and web interfaces for data sharing. The applicant should have experience with cloud-based computing solutions (Azure and Containerization). Desired qualifications include system administration experience, modern DevOps practices, and informatics experience with analysis pipelines in R.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Designs, codes, and tests applications, software and/or database solutions. This work spans the development of APIs, web and data platforms
  • Maintains and updates data applications that support the programmatic team needs
  • Works with the CCS to ensure that technical solutions are designed to meet programmatic needs and enhance programmatic delivery
  • Works with Research Scientists and Spatial Ecologist to support and optimize analysis code/pipelines
  • Works collaboratively and as a liaison with our Information Technology partner to evaluate and implement infrastructure needs, look for process efficiencies, and implement informatics solutions

    Other Duties:
    • Fulfills contractual responsibilities associated with API and web-development and works with partners to ensure the timely completion of deliverables.
    • Provide excellent customer service for Bird Conservancy community
    • Other duties as assigned


      Knowledge, Skills and Experience required (unless otherwise noted):
      • MS or PhD degree in IT/Computer science or 7-10 years' experience in lieu of degree
      • 5 years' experience with custom PostgreSQL Databases
      • Proficient in Python, JavaScript, and .NET coding languages
      • Experience with cloud-based computing solutions (Azure and Containerization)
      • Experience implementing informatics solutions and analysis pipelines in R
      • Experience implementing software development methodologies
      • Sound understanding and implementation of "Best Development Practices"
      • Effective written and verbal communication skills
      • Ability to present technical information to non-technical staff in an understandable fashion
      • Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects and motivate professional staff
      • Analytical and problem-solving skills
      • Aptitude for learning new technologies and the curiosity to keep up with recent trends
      • Effective communicator who can work in a team environment
