Job Description: We are looking for a highly motivated and
experienced Director of Research & Development to help design and
execute research activities which support continued R&D efforts
focused on developing a nucleic acid delivery platform. This role
requires a strategic leader who is responsible for shaping creative
and efficient strategies to support a NIH/NIAID-sponsored Phase II
SBIR project and develop other technology pipelines. The candidate
will be relied on to provide scientific expertise and strategic
guidance towards achieving research targets, developing and
managing IP assets, preparing meaningful data packages, evaluating
potential partnering opportunities, prioritizing R&D resource
allocation, understanding relevant market trends and competitive
landscapes, training and supervising Research Associates and
technical staff, and supporting continued company expansion. The
successful candidate will be a self-starter who works well as part
of a multi-disciplinary team, thrives under the pressure of
deadlines, and is flexible to pivot and switch gears. The ideal
candidate will have extensive know-how and hands on experience with
molecular techniques, immunobiology, microbial genetics and
engineering, and mechanisms of disease (infectious and/or
non-infectious). Prior experience with and/or knowledge of nucleic
acid-based therapies (RNAi, mRNA, CRISPR) is advantageous, along
with prior industry experience.
This position will comprise a combination of bench work, animal
work, and office work, with the potential for some travel, not
expected to exceed 10% of effort.
This is a full-time position for which we initially offer a
one-year employment agreement.
Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Essential Responsibilities and Skills:
Strategize, design, and execute research activities which
support development of a nucleic acid delivery platform.
Oversee Company R&D activities, develop SOPs and protocols,
interpret and communicate scientific results, and provide
recommendations across numerous projects.
Provide scientific expertise and ideas towards achieving
research targets, preparing meaningful data packages, and shaping
creative and efficient strategies to develop technology
Help evaluate potential partnering opportunities for pipeline
assets to prioritize research goals and resource allocation.
Interface with external experts and potential partners to obtain
feedback on Company development plans and stay abreast of market
trends and competitive and new technologies.
Participate in Company strategic planning exercises to ensure
continued alignment of mission, culture, research objectives, and
Promote a wholistic, forward-thinking scientific approach which
values preparedness for future patent, regulatory, clinical,
manufacturing, licensing, and commercialization activities.
Support continued Company expansion through identification of
gaps and acquisition of talent and other resources required to
foster a strong scientific team.
Train and supervise Research Associates, Laboratory Technicians,
Student Interns, other technical staff.
Oversee day-to-day laboratory activities and participate in
laboratory benchwork as needed.
Prepare scientific manuscripts, grant proposals, technical
presentations, and other reports.
Contribute to the conceptualization and implementation of
Company intellectual property management.
Interpret, report, and present results of experiments and animal
studies to external stakeholders.
Other duties as shall reasonably be assigned to accomplish
Company and R&D objectives.
Education and Experience:
To be considered for this position, you must meet the following
Master’s degree (minimum) or PhD (preferred) in relevant field
such as molecular biology, microbiology, cell biology, virology,
biomedical engineering, or other life science field
Minimum 7 years (MS level) or 5 years (PhD level) relevant work
experience in an academic or industry setting, with increasing
Mastery of relevant scientific techniques, including but not
limited to, microbial genetics, molecular cloning, PCR, sequencing,
bacterial and mammalian cell culture, genetic analyses, nucleic
acid and plasmid purification
Excellent written and oral communication skills for interaction
with technical experts and laypeople, supported by peer-reviewed or
other relevant publications and abstracts
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, and Skills:
Experience as a supervisor and/or manager
Experience with CRISPR or other gene editing techniques
Experience with RNA interference (siRNAs, shRNAs, microRNAs)
Previous work with animal models (rodents preferred)
Experience with fluorescent reporter assays, including in vivo
imaging, flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy
Experience with infectious disease (virology) research;
experience with influenza virus is a distinct advantage
Relevant industry experience in biotechnology
